first view

So far this year this blog has been my daily visit to the mountain. I may continue that for all 365 days--the no themes in the title taking a back seat to my need for a daily escape. These snowboarders below the snout of the Nisqually Glacier was our view from Nisqually Vista on our first snowshoe trip five years ago. Is it any wonder that we keep coming back? That trip was a birthday present to my honey. Today is his birthday again. Happy Birthday. (I don't remember marrying an old man.)

snow play area

The snow play area at Paradise finally has enough snow to protect the meadows, but the Park has been closed at the Nisqually west gate or at Longmire the last couple of days because of the storms that have hit the Northwest. This was taken a couple of years ago.

In Memoriam

I did not think that I had met Ranger Margaret Anderson, despite our frequent visits to Mt. Rainier National Park. After all, there are hundreds of staff at the park. But in looking through files for another winter picture for tomorrow's blog post, I ran across this one. It's not the type of photo I usually take, but I was taking a photography class at the time, and the assignment that week was group photos. Returning from our snowshoeing trek that afternoon we encountered a group of rangers either setting out on patrol or just back from patrol. Margaret is the second from the left.

Memorial service for Margaret Anderson, a law enforcement ranger at Mt. Rainier National Park who was killed during a traffic stop at the park on New Year's Day, was held today at Pacific Lutheran University.
